Nutmeg
Myristica fragrans
Most any well-stocked spice cabinet includes a jar of nutmeg -- in fact, "cinnamon-n-nutmeg" is practically one word in some kitchens (the ones that always seem to have that warm aroma of fresh-baked yummies :-) This common culinary spice is a small seed found inside the yellowish-orange fruit of a tropical tree native to the Molucca Islands of Indonesia. Nutmeg has long been valued for its flavorful and aromatic oils, which are used in foods and perfumes. It is also said to relieve stomach problems like indigestion and nausea. A cautionary note -- Scientists warn against consuming too much nutmeg in one sitting, because it contains "myristicin," a hallucinogenic substance that can be toxic.
