Milk Thistle (seed)
Silybum marianum

Milk thistle has been used as an herbal remedy since at least the first century. By the 16th century, milk thistle was commonly used for conditions of "melancholy," which at that time referred to ailments of the liver rather than of one's mood. After a few hundred years of such use, milk thistle was nearly forgotten in the 20th century until German scientists did a chemical analysis of it about 20 years ago. They discovered it contains "silymarin," a mixture that may support the production and regeneration of liver cells. Silymarin is also believed to help the liver prevent various toxic substances from entering its membranes. This discovery has restored milk thistle's centuries-old reputation as a beneficial herb for your liver.
