Anise (seed)
Pimpinella anisum

anise seed

Anise seeds (which are really little fruits) have the delicious fragrance and taste of licorice. In fact, most of the candy we call "licorice" doesn't really have licorice in it — anise is usually used to give candy that licorice flavor. Anise oil is a popular ingredient in toothpastes and mouthwashes, too, continuing an ancient tradition of freshening one's breath with anise seeds. A natural component of anise is "anethole," a volatile oil known to aid proper digestion, which is something the Romans desperately needed after their huge feasts. If anise worked for them, chances are it can help you, too.
