Gen Mai Cha Green Tea

Green tea with rice might sound unusual, but our Gen Mai Cha has a unique flavor you’ll enjoy.

"Green tea was scarce in postwar Japan, so peasant farmers added toasted brown rice to extend their supplies. Today, Gen Mai Cha (or "brown rice tea") is enjoyed around the world. Our version combines green tea, nutty toasted rice and a traditional powdered green tea called matcha to create a delicious blend suitable for everyone — rich or poor."

Brewing Instructions

For smooth green tea with a mild, delicate flavor, always start with water that is very hot but not boiling.

Hot Tea by the Cup

Pour very hot water (just at the brink of boiling) over one tea bag. Steep 2 minutes and remove tea bag. Sweeten if desired.

Iced Tea by the Pitcher

Pour 2 cups very hot water (just at the brink of boiling) over four tea bags in a heat-resistant container. Steep 2 minutes and remove tea bags. If desired, add sweetener while tea is hot. Add 2 cups cold water and chill.

Fun Facts

While the story of the “man on the moon” is common to many cultures, Japanese folklore instead celebrates a “moon rabbit” who makes a ceremonial rice cake called mochi.
