Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. That adds up to more than 200,000 new cases of breast cancer every year, and despite advances in prevention, these numbers increase annually.

Still, there are good reasons for hope. According to the American Cancer Society, the five–year survival rate for localized breast cancer has increased from 80% in the 1950s to 98% today. Increased awareness of the need for early detection plays a crucial part — the National Breast Cancer Foundation estimates that 70% of all breast cancer cases are first detected during breast self-exams.
